60pedia is a social space. A renewal and a resolve. For all of us as a community of people – to remind ourselves that life is for the living. Every single moment. Life is not about counting our days till we turn 60, hoping that when we ‘retire’ is when we will finally live.

For years we have been made to believe that life as we know it stops as we move towards the Big 60. Rising life expectancy and hence longer years of living on your savings and investments with no earning. And then you have rising inflation (averaging at 7%) with an even steeper medical inflation at 14%. All this is supposed to imply some serious planning is required to achieve ‘freedom’ at the age of 60. And yet, there is this growing trend of people across age groups opting out of secure work environments (the so-called job security) to find meaning and purpose in their lives. Especially after the 2020 pandemic, terms like The Great Resignation, The Great Attrition, etc regularly feature in our daily timelines, water cooler banters and weekend coffee conversations.

We are all living longer, as a fact, thanks to major progress in science and healthcare. But are we living better, happier, more fulfilled and a life enriched with purpose? Or are we somehow getting socially conditioned to plot our lives as ‘till retirement’ and ‘after retirement’? Retirement is a state of mind, not a diktat. Certainly not a magical switch which is flicked on your 60th birthday, rendering you meaningless to everything you have given your life to.

Retirement is a state of mind. Not an age. Renewment is a life filled with purpose

Whether you are in a ‘job’ or not, in most organisations the age at which members of the workforce are ‘retired’ is 58 or 60 because organisations need to have a steady influx of newer, younger people. That however has nothing really to do with your life, your abilities and your desires, dreams, hopes and ambition. The real question is to think and plan as much about what you will do in retirement as how much to save for retirement. A life filled with purpose is the life worth looking forward to. And to live that life, lifelong, we need to plan. That’s renewment.
